Planet Killers

“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” – Jack London

What would inspire an artist to create a work about such destruction? For me it is about the science, the reality that this could potentially happen to the Earth again someday. As discussed in the “This Week in Space” episode video below, the danger is a real one and proper funding is important if we are to protect our world.

This armageddon artwork was originally intended to go with a little short story I had running around in my head a few years ago when all the talk about whether Apophis was going to hit Earth. Essentially the plot of the story was as all eyes were on the approaching Apophis, due April 13, 2036, a small string of large asteroids approaching from the direction of the sun strike the Earth on April 1st instead.

Barinthus – Guide of Souls

“Other world! There is no other world! Here or nowhere is the whole fact.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Barinthus – (Manannán mac Lir) A Celtic god of the sea and is associated with the mists between the worlds. In Irish mythology he is often referred to as a psychopomp, a “guide of souls” to the Otherworld.

Is there an after-life? A heaven, hell, Other world, a dimension outside of our own where our energy essence travels to after our physical body gives up our ghost? Even in science there are theories of dimensions (parallel universes) beyond the four we can perceive.

Quantum Modulation

May 19, 2010 on 12:16 pm | In Science, Science Fiction Art | Comments Off

All these fifty years of conscious brooding have brought me no nearer to the answer to the question, ‘What are light quanta?’ Nowadays every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks he knows it, but he is mistaken.” – Albert Einstein

Quantum Modulation -by Randall Klopping - copyright 2010
Quantum Modulation -2010

Quantum modulation is a term that comes from particle physics and quantum mechanics. When studying such things I often like to play with the concept visually in art, such as in this abstract representation of the tunneling and scattering effect of the beam.

This artwork was designed over a year ago and in the chaos of my life had been forgotten until last week an email conversation reminded me of it and I decided to render it.

This science artwork is available as:

Customizable Art Poster available up to 78″ x 52″ and can be customized with your text if you need to promote a business or science event.

Gift Ideas to Inspire Kids in Math and Science

October 15, 2009 on 6:58 pm | In Inspiration in Education, Science, Science Fiction Art, Space Art | Comments Off

“The most important thing we can do is inspire young minds and to advance the kind of science, math and technology education that will help youngsters take us to the next phase of space travel.” John Glenn

As the Christmas shopping season approaches I am working on creating posters & products based on my art to help inspire young minds with a desire to learn their math and science. Most of my artworks now are fractal illusions, created by mathematically altering the normal geometric nature of fractals to form multiple components that when joined together form an illusion of the universe. It is through math and science that I am able to make the universe my playground.

Below are some of the posters and products that I have gotten set up in my store. I will be working to setup and create more in the days ahead. If you are interested in purchasing one just click on the one you like and browse more in my store if you like. I’ve been working as hard as I’m able from bed and gotten many science fiction & space art prints & products to choose from already set up.

Within the Heart of Poseidon (art)

October 4, 2009 on 11:22 pm | In Science, Science Fiction Art, Space Art, The Cosmos | Comments Off

“The strength and weakness of physicists is that we believe in what we can measure. And if we can’t measure it, then we say it probably doesn’t exist. And that closes us off to an enormous amount of phenomena that we may not be able to measure because they only happened once. For example, the Big Bang. … That’s one reason why they scoffed at higher dimensions for so many years. Now we realize that there’s no alternative…” Michio Kaku

In the field of theoretical physics Dr. Michio Kaku is one of my favorites. He is fun to watch and listen to also in his many TV and Radio appearances, so energetic and passionate about the realm of possibilities. I’ve only gotten to read two of his books, “hyperspace” and “Parallel Worlds” but I look forward to the day when I start earning more money through my art so that I can afford more of his and others within the world of physics.

The Poseidon Nebula by Randall Klopping -2009
The Poseidon Nebula -2009

The Captain of the Quallarian pleasure cruiser had told me one of their legends of what sounded much like some sort of gateway into another parallel universe. He had described an immense nebula of blue, “like a stormy sea” he’d described it, “with many jewels glittering within.”

I had detect such a nebula once several years ago but in a hurry at the time I’d only passed and admired it at a distance, so I decided to give it a good exploration. It proved to be a particularly dense nebula and rather difficult to navigate as it bore huge clouds of crystalline formations within the gasses and dust, reflecting back the beams of my ships scanners.

“Hidden within the very heart of it” the Captain had told, “lies a hole in the universe, a bottomless chasm filled with giant spirits of light.”

It took me nearly a week to find a way through the endless maze of narrow passages between the clouds, then suddenly there it lay, lit by a single blue star.

I decided to explore the nebula a bit more. After all, I was more than a bit curious if the tear in the fabric of space would still be visible from beneath it. I soon learned that it in fact was not but the chamber beneath the entrance to the Well of Souls was a chasm of fractured space-time. A series of small rifts in its center spewed forth jets of hot plasma, while immense bolts of energy crackled throughout the chasm like massive thunderstrokes of lightning.

All of these science fiction artworks are fractal illusions, inspired by science and woven with a healthy dose of imagination.

The Feathered Dinosaur Nebula

September 28, 2009 on 1:28 pm | In Science, Science Fiction Art, Space Art | Comments Off

“Imagination has brought mankind through the dark ages to its present state of civilization. Imagination led Columbus to discover America. Imagination led Franklin to discover electricity.” – L. Frank Baum

As I was returning home from the Brighid Nebula my ships sensors detected a wormhole nearby and I decided to take a little detour to see where it led.

I emerged from the wormhole in utter darkness and didn’t really think anything of it at first. I’ve often come across huge starless voids in my travels. But suddenly I realized there were soft scratching sounds along the Guardians hull and I switched on the lights.

Artist’s note – Much of my new style of Fractal Illusions has come from exploring and experimenting with pattern combination’s in the fractal software I use (Apophysis). This artwork is the result of such play, working on further developing of my nebula techniques and a bit of an accident. I got distracted as I was bouncing back and forth from this and twitter and I accidentally filled in 3 of the wrong fields rather than the ones I intended to and suddenly I had this. I thought it a rather intriguing accident so decided to render it. Its title was inspired by a science article I had recently read about a new feathered dinosaur fossil having been found in China.

Gravitational Light and Time Travel – Inspiration in art

September 2, 2009 on 7:32 pm | In Science, Science Fiction Art | Comments Off

“If we could travel into the past, it’s mind-boggling what would be possible. For one thing, history would become an experimental science, which it certainly isn’t today. The possible insights into our own past and nature and origins would be dazzling. For another, we would be facing the deep paradoxes of interfering with the scheme of causality that has led to our own time and ourselves. I have no idea whether it’s possible, but it’s certainly worth exploring.” – Carl Sagan, NOVA interview, Oct. 12, 1999

Gravitational Light - Time Loops by Randall Klopping © 2008
Gravitational Light – Time Loops © 2008

My art series Gravitational Light was inspired by the theoretical concept of time travel using a circulating cylinder of light to create gravitational forces. Dr. Ronald L. Mallett theorizes that the exterior gravitational field would contain closed time-like lines, which would indicate the possibility of time travel into the past.

I love the concept of manipulating space-time in such a manner and it has become one of my favorites to explore artistically. Being that fractals are a mathematical art form I have found it fascinating to explore visual patterns of light.

Meddling with Space-Time © 2008

Now in a science concept like time travel one must take into consideration all the possibilities. My instinct (gut feeling) tells me that if mankind ever achieves the ability to travel back in time, we are in big trouble! We have enough problems just dealing with the present. To me it would be wiser to go stand in the middle of an open field, holding up a 20-foot steel pipe, during a massive thunderstorm.

After all, we really wouldn’t want to erase human civilization from the universe would we? ;-)

We Are All Made of Star Stuff

September 1, 2009 on 2:06 pm | In Science, Science Fiction Art | Comments Off

“We are made of star stuff.” –Carl Sagan

Virtually everything we see about us, the animals, people, plants, rocks, dirt and everything else on the Earth and even our moon, are all possible because of a star. Almost every element in the periodic table save hydrogen, helium, and lithium were created during the life of a star.

Life Storm - abstract artwork by Randall Klopping -2009
Life Storm -2009

This is the inspiration for my abstract artwork “Life Storm” for it is the fusion process within stars from which most of the elements in our universe heavier than helium were created. It is through the death of stars that these heavier elements were distributed throughout the universe and formed into planets, moons, as well as objects such as asteroids and comets. If you’d like to learn more about the how stars are a part of life watch the video below.

When the Universe was but a Child

August 31, 2009 on 2:00 pm | In Science, Science Fiction Art, Space Art | Comments Off

When the Universe was but a Child -2009
When the Universe was but a Child -2009

Have you ever imagined what the universe looked like when it was very young? Just about the time when the immense clouds of hydrogen had cooled to a fair degree and the earliest stars were just coming to life to light up the darkness.

Here on Earth visual artists like myself were the original storytellers beginning roughly 35,000 years ago upon the walls of caves. Thus to me this is a perfect subject for a space artwork! To tell the story of a time many billions of years ago when the universe was in it’s infancy. A time of great mystery in which the universe herself did not know what would come from the chaos.

My art is often a visual exploration of the things I study in subjects like astronomy & physics as well as other fields of science. Exploring things visually helps my mind to grasp such concepts and to express what is awakened within me. Perhaps time will tell that even a disabled artist such as myself has much to offer this world. I have had many young people already tell me that they are inspired by my work so one of my hopes is that perhaps it will help inspire young minds with a passion to understand the world and universe in which we live. For when the imagination is awakened then soon comes a desire to learn. It is why I think of Imagination as the first step upon the path of enlightenment.

The Original will be available at
the Imagicon Art Show – May 21 – 23, 2010.
